Immunomedics Background
Immunomedics today focuses on the development of therapeutic antibodies to treat different cancers, immunological disorders and other serious conditions. But in 1997, its principal U.S. focus was on the launch of a radiolabeled antibody fragment, CEA-Scan®.
CEA-Scan was a kit hospitals could mix to make a nuclear medicine test capable of imaging CT- and MRI-occult metastases of tumors that express carcinogenic embryonic antigen (CEA). Such occult metastases explain why so many patients deemed to have had a "probably curable" operation go on to suffer fatal recurrences a year or more later.
As CEA-Scan neared final FDA review, Immunomedics' first licensee was acquired by a pharma company that elected not to market CEA-Scan. A replacement licensee was found.
As managing director of EP Health/Tech, a company formed to manage the former clients of ProClinica Inc., Mel had landed the Immunomedics advertising and medical education account, producing a widely recognized journal ad on the launch of CEA-Scan, the first antibody-fragment imaging agent, and educational monographs (see image above right) and convention exhibit graphics targeted at both nuclear medicine doctors and the cancer specialists who refer to them. Upon termination of his agreement with EP Health/Tec, Mel became a consultant to Immunomedics, to help determine how languishing licenses sales could be increased.
